Chapter Thirteen
Olivia took a deep breath before walking into school the Monday after her dad dropped her off. She hadnât mentioned the move to her mom, not wanting the nightmare that was her home life to become any worse.
Her dad had promised to be there when Olivia told her mom and help move her out as quickly as possible. Though Ellis attempted to remain amiable with his ex-wife for the sake of their daughter, there was only so much peace to be had with Renee. Both Olivia and her dad knew that.
As Olivia walked through the corridors of the school with a sense of dread, she searched the faces of her classmates for Grey. When she reached her locker without seeing him, a sense of relief washed over her.
âHey, you. I missed you this weekend. Itâs not as much fun holding my momâs hand at church.â
Any other day, Greyâs voice and humor would have incited a smile from Olivia. Not today. Today was going to be the day she told him about moving at the end of the school year.
Olivia finished grabbing her books and shut the door to her locker, âHi, Grey.â
âIs it just me or is something wrong? Whatâs going on, Liv?â
Greyâs caramel brown eyes darkened with concern as he straightened from where he leaned on the lockers and stepped toward Olivia. She wondered how it was possible to miss someone and want to hide from them at the same time.
âNothing. I got back home late last night and didnât sleep well. Thatâs all.â
He nodded but still seemed skeptical of her lack of excitement in seeing him again.
âOkay, well, I missed you, Liv. I guess Iâll see you after class then.â
Before she could return his affection, Grey turned and walked down the hallway toward his first-hour class. Olivia let out a sigh and proceeded to her classroom, the tension between them now a gnawing ache in her chest.
The rest of the week went about the same. Grey seemed to be giving Olivia space while she made every excuse not to be alone with him, lacking the courage to initiate the conversation. Luckily, Morgan was a great buffer between the two of them.
âCome on! Itâs Saturday night. I canât just be your third wheel all weekend. I know you became a churchy person but I still like to go to parties. Whatever it is that you need to talk with Grey about, just get it over with. This has been the longest week ever, Liv.â
âYouâre telling me. I just donât know if Iâm ready or not, Morgan.â
âYouâre breaking up with him, arenât you? Oh my gosh, Liv! Why would you do that? Heâs so hot⦠and sweet!â
Morgan grabbed Oliviaâs shoulders, perhaps attempting to shake some sense into her. Luckily the noise level at Sandyâs was at an all-time high with the Saturday dinner rush so no one overheard her overzealous best friend.
âIâm not breaking up with him. Iâll tell you later. Just go to your party.â
âYes! Finally. You know you can come, too.
